In the continual effort to get my act together and figure out what I’m doing with this blog, I joined Blogging University at The Daily Post. They run the Blogging U courses every month, which have daily writing assignments. The site also offers daily prompts among lots of other info. I joined Blogging 101, so I should be posting more often this month, though I’m already behind. Typical. This is my attempt to catch up.
Who I Am
I do have an About page (only slightly stale) that took me weeks to write. I’ve been told it’s too long, which I take to mean “boring.” I’m not an exciting person with an exciting life. That’s why I write fiction. I recently read a book that said no one thinks of themselves as normal, but I do. I’m normal and boring.
But I recently did this…
There was no way to get a photo that showed how pink the top part is with the purple and blue layers.
I’ve had a picture of this hair cut and color for months and finally had the opportunity to do it. I also had to come to terms with the fact people would look at me. While all personality tests point to extrovert, I don’t like being the center of attention. I asked my son if I was too old for this hair, and he told me, “Who cares? Do what you want.” (I need to adopt that as my motto in life.) It was a drastic change from my long, auburn hair. And I love it! At least my hair isn’t normal and boring. It does rule out a lot of jobs, so I better succeed at this writing thing.
Why I’m Here
Writers are told they need to have a “platform.” I do a little side work as a website designer, so what better way to procrastinate writing my novel than to build a website and start a blog! Later I found that platform in the form of a blog is less necessary for fiction writers, but I’d already started doing this, and I like it.
My lack of focus and fear of judgment keeps me from posting as often as I’d like. Being criticized is part of being a writer though. The more successful the writer, the worse it gets, so I need to get over it. This is an effort to do that and maybe even narrow my broad range of subjects in the process. Maybe.
In the meantime, I’ll do my writing assignments for Blogging U and see where it goes.
